Our Attention Seeking Culture

In the age of the internet it has become normal to spam out every moment, thought (yes, hypocritical), or whatever contrived thing we come up with as a pot-shot at going viral. While there are content creators who genuinely care about educating, spreading awareness or just having fun, many are simply looking to cash in on whatever works.

Conservatives rail against OnlyFans girls, raking in millions of dollars in fees for flashes catering to lonely porn-sick men. Moderates rail against the grifting vloggers, bloggers and social media personalities exploiting their fame for donations, paid subscriptions and merchandise. Liberals… I couldn’t say.

One of the major problems of the modern world is the overprotection bestowed particularly on middle class children. The efforts now made to keep sacred feelings unhurt in the face of disagreements and criticism. The reason I bring this up is that it prevents people from going out into the world to get an average job.

The ego stroking world of the internet where strangers bestow hundreds of pounds on a streamer or personality for little reason other than admiration. It draws in impressionable teens to a carefree career of clickbait for cash. It disincentivises real work and investment.

The remedy to modern anxiety in my opinion is a major dose of exposure therapy. The well-off may skip the career stage of low level customer service. The inevitable experience of an unhinged member of the general public complaining. Whether founded or not, it is mentally toughening and makes one thankful for the reprieve of home at the day’s end.
